Chapter Eight

Derek glanced around wanting to be sure no one caught him entering the abducted woman’s home—especially the so-called witness. He didn’t want anyone thinking he was the villain returning to the scene of the crime. A few days had come and gone with nothing new on the disappearance of one, Anne Marie Aubersson. What the only witness had to say was less than credible considering her nervous state. Derek thought it more likely she was coming down from whatever she’d taken.

The more he thought about it, the more he was convinced that something about her story sounded rehearsed, as if someone had put her up to it. Derek mentally shrugged, and using a set of lock picks he always kept with him, he let himself into the back door of the house. Easing the door closed behind him, the lock slipped into place sounding extraordinarily loud in the otherwise silent house. He needed to take a careful look around. Maybe there was something the police overlooked. He knew Alvarez was always thorough in his cases, but you never knew when something that was overlooked could turn out to be important.

Where to start... The house was a single story. Derek headed for the front room since it was the furthest away. A motorized wheelchair lay on its side, exactly where it had been three days earlier. He hunkered down beside it for a closer look. It was heavy looking, not the type that could be easily knocked over. He was tempted to haul it upright, but if the police came back, they’d know someone had been there. He knew for a fact they would be back at some point to look for more evidence, especially if their so-called witness stuck to her story. Was there some kind of clue that might connect him to the missing woman? McCready wouldn’t be satisfied until something was found that would send Derek to jail and trial. It made Derek wonder what the Irish cop had against him. Maybe one of these days he’d figure it out. He refocused his attention on the rest of the room.

Papers were scattered across the desk as if they’d been glanced at then tossed there. Derek wasn’t worried about leaving prints now, since the forensic team had already dusted the place. He gingerly rifled through them and found something interesting.

Notes on Edward Morgan, high ranking behind-the-scene state politician. There was enough scandal attached to the man to bury him in a ten foot deep grave, but as yet, no one could make it stick. Derek glanced through the article wondering why the woman who lived here would be interested in the man. More to the point, had she discovered something that put her life in jeopardy?

Derek dropped the papers, frustrated he could find no answers, not even a simple clue. Could the forensic team have done that good a job in here? He didn’t think so but took his time going through the house. He wanted a sense
